Jess & Bruce's Fun-Filled Spring Wedding at Old Kent Barn

Some weddings are elegant. Some weddings are emotional. Some weddings are beautifully organised.

Jess and Bruce’s wedding at Old Kent Barn managed to be all three, whilst also being one of the most genuinely fun weddings I’ve photographed as a Kent wedding photographer.

From the moment I arrived, it was clear this was going to be a day packed with personality. Every detail reflected Jess and Bruce perfectly, from the thoughtful personal touches throughout the venue to the wonderfully quirky additions like 3D printed tanks and gonks, which brought constant smiles (and a few laughs) from guests all day long.

There’s a saying I once heard: if you go to a wedding, be part of that wedding — don’t sit back, don’t spectate, get involved and enjoy the couple’s day with them.

It genuinely felt like everyone at this Old Kent Barn wedding had taken that to heart.

More than anything, it was the people that made this day so memorable. Guests didn’t just attend Jess and Bruce’s wedding — they fully immersed themselves in it. From the bridesmaids and groomsmen through to family and friends, there was a constant energy, laughter and togetherness that carried through every part of the day. It was exactly the kind of atmosphere that makes documentary wedding photography so rewarding.

Old Kent Barn provided its usual flawless backdrop for a spring wedding in Kent. The venue team ran everything seamlessly, allowing the day to flow naturally without ever feeling rushed. Even the weather played its part, helping to create the perfect conditions for a relaxed and joyful celebration (though Jess’s traditional sausage-burying efforts may also deserve some credit).

Jess and Bruce were very clear from the outset that they wanted their wedding photography to focus on natural moments rather than heavy posing. As a documentary wedding photographer in Kent, that is exactly the kind of approach I love. We planned the day carefully so that group photos and portraits were efficient and relaxed, ensuring they spent as much time as possible with their guests rather than being pulled away from their own celebration.

That said, we still made space for something a little more creative. As the evening light softened, we stepped outside with Luke from L Driver Media to capture a series of romantic sunset portraits. These artistic images perfectly balanced the fun, energy and emotion that had defined the entire day.

The speeches delivered some unforgettable moments, particularly an outstanding Maid of Honour speech from Jess’s sister, which had the entire room laughing in unison. It was one of those rare speeches that perfectly sums up a couple and the people around them.

The evening celebrations continued in the same spirit. Before the first dance, The Wedding Chaps hosted a brilliant Mr & Mrs game that had everyone fully engaged and laughing along. Later, Jess and Bruce embraced one of my favourite alternatives to the traditional table dash — a Sofa Crash. Instead of rushing between tables, they invited guests to join them for relaxed, fun portraits on the sofa, resulting in some of the most natural and joy-filled images of the day.

Jess and Bruce’s Old Kent Barn wedding was a perfect reminder of why I love photographing weddings in Kent. It was relaxed, emotional, full of laughter, and above all, completely true to the couple.
